ShOR is Bloggy: FX’s Trippy, Mind-Bending Show ‘Legion’ Renewed

This news makes me extremely happy. After being almost certain that the show would be prematurely canceled because of the added episode this season, FX has proved me wrong and has renewed Legion for season 3. It was announced today by FX’s president of programming Erich Schrier and Nick Gad.

The psychedelic and mind-bending X-Men based show are two episodes away from ending its sophomore run and many fans are as confused as ever as David Haller, played to delicious brilliance by Downton Abbey alum Dan Stevens, searches for Amahl Farouk’s (Navid Negahban) body in order to prevent the end of the world. Who causes the end of the world? Well, no one has said. It’s implied it could be the Shadow King who wreaks havoc and destroys everything but more and more fingers are pointing to David being the culprit. With two episodes left, there’s no telling who’s the villain or who’s the hero anymore and it is this kind of trippiness that makes Legion all the more enjoyable.

The third season is set to air sometime in 2019. Collider has hypothesized that it could be as late as 2020 before we get another season of Legion. With showrunner and producer Noah Hawley making his directorial debut with Pale Blue Dot (starring Natalie Portman and Legion alums Stevens and Jon Hamm) this summer and with Fargo also on the slate for FX sometime next year, it’s possible that Legion will be pushed even later than usual to give time to allow Hawley to shoot both Dot and Fargo before turning his attention to Legion.

Either way, despite the show’s low ratings this season, Schrier and Gad are excited about what Legion has to offer. “Legion has redefined the superhero drama and exceeded all expectations as the intensity and revelation build through the second season,” Schrier said in a statement. “We are incredibly proud of Noah Hawley’s achievement and are honored to continue the series as it pushes the boundaries of conventional television storytelling. We are also grateful for the contributions of our executive producers, John Cameron, Lauren Shuler Donner, Simon Kinberg, and Jeph Loeb with Marvel Television, as well as our outstanding cast and crew of this groundbreaking show.”

No doubt when the new season does finally air, the audience will be in for a big surprise and an even crazier mind trip. Let’s just hope they choose to ditch the Summerland crew and focus more on David and Lenny (Aubrey Plaza) next season, but that’s another story for another time.

You can catch Legion on FX Tuesdays at 10/9c. The season finale is slated for June 12th.
